Candle Maker Secrets

The great thing about creating candles yourself is that they can be personalised and made in any shape or size. You can also add whatever colors and fragrances that you like for that extra touch. They make the perfect gift and you can create them in various interesting shapes and sizes.

Today not all candles are manufactured from paraffin gel. Beeswax and soy wax candles have become very popular over the last decade and for good reason. They are less damaging to the environment as they do not add to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and also they burn much slower. Another factor is that they do not produce large quantities of melted wax that is hard to remove.

The candles that we usually see are made from a paraffin gel, but other common forms include beeswax candles and soy candles. Many people now prefer these kinds as they are better for the environment and also burn slower and produce less deposits of melted wax.

Before you start the candle making process you should check that you have all the necessary equipment. A vessel to melt the wax is essential, this will be required to melt the raw wax. Many people use what is called a double-boiler. This is basically a small pot inside a large pot. While the inner pot holds the wax, the outer and larger is for the hot water.

Other necessary equipment includes a thermometer, a scale, an old spoon, and a ladle. A measuring cup is also preferential to ensure you have the right amount of melted wax. But the most important ingredient is of course the wax itself. Which type of wax you use is down to your own preference. You can easily buy the necessities today with the use of online sources, which is especially useful if you do not have a local craft shop where you live.

One other item, and perhaps the most crucial, is wicks. Most often braided cotton is used in their manufacture, though other options are available.

Many people will elect to include their own fragrances and colors with their own candles. You need to make sure that these are to be used with candles as other forms can easily catch fire or even explode.

If you choose to include color or scent in your own candle making, be sure to find out if the ingredients you buy are safe for this purpose. Other types may be combustible and therefore highly dangerous.

I remember the days - back in the 70s.... one fun one was to take a 1/2 gallon milk carton and place a taper in the middle - surround it with ice cubes and pour in colored wax around the ice cubes - made a fun, lacy candle with the taper in the center for the wick and to help it burn - hum am getting ideas here again -welcome to Searchwarp!
